Crane handlers need to operate the machinery with precision, as well as have a good understanding of safety in the workplace and what to do should a load become unbalanced, stuck or otherwise compromised.

For all the above reasons, crane operators in Noosa and the surrounding area require a High-Risk Work (HRW) license before they can legally operate a crane. Although crane operators aren't required to take a driving test in the same way as truck drivers, for example, they do need an HRW license before they can operate a crane here. Before a potential crane operator can apply for an HRW license, they need to complete a suitable training course, delivered by a recognised training organisation. 

There are a number of different elements to an HRW license, covering different types of cranes and working at height. After operatives have completed the training course, they need to be successfully assessed for competence before an HRW license is issued. The license needs to be renewed every five years, to ensure operatives maintain their skills and are aware of any fresh requirements or advances that affect working at height.
